Many people use which to determine the actual command that will be used when one is executed. There are two problems with that.
The first is that there are at least two versions of which, one of which is a csh script that doesnât work well in a Bourne-type shell (thankfully, this version is becoming very rare). The second problem is that which is an external command, and it cannot know exactly what the shell will do with any given command. All it does is search the directories in the PATH variable for an executable with the same name: $ which echo printf
/bin/echo
/usr/bin/printf
